Joshua 6 has one of the better-known
stories in the Bible. This is where we find the story of Jericho. But we also
see something else take place, and there is a lesson in this story to learn.
As I mentioned in the previous post,
Joshua had put himself in a place to hear the word of the Lord. In chapter 6 we
see what that word is. The Lord gives Joshua the instructions about how to take
Jericho (Joshua 6:2-5).
One of the first things that I noticed
when reading this story again is that Israel did exactly what God told them to
do. They marched around the city in the way that God instructed them and how
God instructed them. When they did that, they destroyed the city of Jericho. I
guess all of that wandering helped them listen to God. But this isn't the one
thing I wanted to tell you about this chapter.
The one thing that stood out to me was
that they didn't stop short. Jericho was not a small city. It was probably hot.
It was a lot of walking, but they kept going. They got up the next day and did
it again. They probably complained, but they walked anyway.
When life gets hard we tend to stop
short. I know I do. We don't take a few more steps and keep going, but we
should. We never know how close we are to something. We could be right on the
edge of a breakthrough, but stop at the moment it gets hard. If Israel had
stopped one lap, one day, or even one step short, they would not have taken
Jericho.
Don't stop short. You never know what
is right there at the next step.
