“[looking away from all that will distract us and] focusing our
eyes on Jesus, who is the Author and Perfecter of faith....” - Hebrews 12:2a AMP
Have you ever lost focus?
Maybe it was a task you were working on
and one of your kids (or spouse) come into the room or called out to you from
another place in the house causing you to turn your attention from what you
were doing to them or their calling out. Then you look back at your task and
have to remember where you were or what exactly you have done. Did I add salt
to this? Did I put in the sugar for the cookies? How many cups of flour did I
put in the mixing bowl already? You get the idea. Have you been there?
There are times in life when we can be
the same way. We are going along in life - our day to day activities - our gaze
is laser focused on Jesus. Then all of a sudden something happens in our life
that seemingly comes out of nowhere and takes our focus off of Jesus. We begin
then to fall into the storm of what is now happening in our life. We lost in
the “what-ifs” and the “why God” and the “how could you” and we being too
slowly sink into the storm that had now taken our gaze. Have you been there?
I am reminded of a story in the book
Matthew that illustrates this very well.
“Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on
ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had
dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that
night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance
from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. Shortly
before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.
When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were
terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I.
Don’t be afraid.”
“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
“Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”” - Matthew 14:22-33 NIV
All the devil needs is an instant. Just
one second to alter your gaze. The devil knows your kryptonite. He knows what
to bring to the front of your mind. He knows your weaknesses. He knows how to
take you out of the game and he will try everything he can to get you to focus
on the storm or weakness - so you won’t see the remedy - JESUS!
“I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My
help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.” – Psalm 121:1-2 NIV
