I have heard this song many times, but I was reminded of the words while I was texting with a friend. She said the following:
“You’ve been through a lot - just rest in His arms and let it all go to Him and let Him do the work - in His way and time. I don’t know what your part is, I really don’t, only God does but it sounds like you have probably tried pretty hard in the relationship and it may be time to rest and let Him work. Sit back and just watch Him (and her) and He will give you eyes to see and ears to hear what He’s doing.”
These words immediately sent a bunch of stuff in my head. All things I have written for the last few weeks, the lesson that I just taught as church and the lyrics to this song. In fact, as she was texting me I sent her a link to the song.
So give these song lyrics a read and then we will break them down:
———————————
Hold it all together
Everybody needs you strong
But life hits you out of nowhere
And barely leaves you holding on
And when you're tired of fighting
Chained by your control
There's freedom in surrender
Lay it down and let it go
So when you're on your knees and answers seem so far away
You're not alone, stop holding on and just be held
Your world's not falling apart, it's falling into place
I'm on the throne, stop holding on and just be held
Just be held, just be held
If your eyes are on the storm
You'll wonder if I love you still
But if your eyes are on the cross
You'll know I always have and I always will
And not a tear is wasted
In time, you'll understand
I'm painting beauty with the ashes
Your life is in My hands
So when you're on your knees and answers seem so far away
You're not alone, stop holding on and just be held
Your world's not falling apart, it's falling into place
I'm on the throne, stop holding on and just be held
Just be held, just be held
Lift your hands, lift your eyes
In the storm is where you'll find Me
And where you are, I'll hold your heart
I'll hold your heart
Come to Me, find your rest
In the arms of the God who won't let go
———————————
Hold it all together / Everybody needs you strong / But life hits you out of nowhere / And barely leaves you holding on
This is a lie. Sometimes there just needs to be tears. I have battled this a lot. I’m tough. I’m a guy. Guys don’t cry. Crying is for whimps. I need to be strong. But it’s a lie. As I have said in a previous post, being strong or acting strong is a facade that people can see through. Even David realized that their were times from tears and showing a softer side. Life hurts. Life leaves wounds. Paul, however encourages us to “be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power!” (Ephesians 6:10) There is strength in the weakness.
And when you're tired of fighting / Chained by your control / There's freedom in surrender / Lay it down and let it go
This is where the words of my friend hit. This is something that I struggle with. Letting it go. I also mentioned this in a previous post (ROADS UNTRAVELED). But I think the real reason why this is a problem for me is because I don’t want to be passive. There are some that would say “you aren’t doing enough” or “what have you done to fix it.” “You are just sitting by and letting it happen.” “Do more.” But for the first time last night, I had the feeling of relief when I read those words - both the lyrics and the text message. There is freedom in surrender. Paul’s words - “Christ has set us free to live a free life. So take your stand! Never again let anyone put a harness of slavery on you.” (Galatians 5:1 MSG)
So breathe a little bit and turn it over to God. Lay it down at the feet of Almighty God. You know ‘it’ is. Do it now. Stop being chained.
