“When I felt like the burden was more than I could hold
When the whispers of worry overwhelmed my soul
You never left me alone
You were there all along
I was down to the wire hoping
You would come through
And You stepped in the fire like You always do
How I'm convinced of Your love
You are more than enough”[1]
As I heard this song for the first time last month, I was reminded
again of Job. A few weeks ago we looked at part of Job’s story in a post called
“The Middle” (part 2 of this series). Job experienced a sudden storm in his
life and it came out of nowhere.
Have you ever experienced one of life’s storms that come out of
nowhere? I know I have. It’s one of those situations that totally blindside us
and we are left in shock.
Job loss
Death of a family member
Death of a friend
Cancer
Divorce
Storms - they can just come up and leave us asking “well, what
now?” or “hey God don’t you care?”
This is illustrated in a story in the New Testament. Let’s go to
Mark 4:
"A furious squall came up, and the waves
broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the
stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him
and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?”
- Mark 4:37-38 NIV
So here we see the disciples, who were fisherman, scared that they
were going to die in this storm. The storm must have caught them off guard and
this must have been some storm because they were scared and this very well
wasn’t the first one they had been in. But in their panic they shout at Jesus
“don’t you care!”
We do the same thing in our life. A storm suddenly comes up and we
think that Jesus is asleep at the wheel and come to Him shouting “Hey, don’t
you care?!”
Jesus responded to His disciples the same way that He does us...
“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be
still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. Why are you so
afraid? Do you still have no faith?” - Mark 4:39-40 NIV
He just simply asks them “where’s your faith?” Do you still not
know that I am faithful? Do you still not know that I am beside you and never
going to leave? Do you still not know that I am in control? Do you still not
know that I AM?
God is faithful. God is there in the storm. God is not going to
leave. He is faithful to us.
Repeat these words to yourself or out loud:
“You are faithful
Why should my heart be afraid?
You are faithful
I know You're not gonna change
You are faithful, faithful”[1]
“God has said, ‘Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.’
So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What
can mere mortals do to me?’ Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to
you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus
Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” - Hebrews 13:5b-8 NIV
Hallelujah that God is faithful!!!
