Back in August I was preparing to teach
the 4th and 5th grade students at church. We were learning about the book of
Genesis and I was teaching about Abraham. But the week before we learned about
Noah.
At the Saturday night service, we were
reviewing the stories, and I talked about the rainbow that God used as a
promise:
“Then God said, “I am giving you a sign
of my covenant with you and with all living creatures, for all generations to
come. I have placed my rainbow in the clouds. It is the sign of my covenant
with you and with all the earth. When I send clouds over the earth, the rainbow
will appear in the clouds, and I will remember my covenant with you and with
all living creatures. Never again will the floodwaters destroy all life. When I
see the rainbow in the clouds, I will remember the eternal covenant between God
and every living creature on earth.” Then God said to Noah, “Yes, this rainbow
is the sign of the covenant I am confirming with all the creatures on earth.””
Genesis 9:12-17 NLT
So after the review we went on to tell
the story of Abraham (some of that lesson was put into the post
"Stars").
After church that evening, my family
and I went to Walmart. We were in the store for about an hour, and it was
raining while we were there. We finished up shopping, checked out, and headed
outside. When we got outside, to the left was a big huge rainbow. It was one of
the brightest and fullest rainbows that I have ever seen.
I quickly grabbed my phone, along with everyone else who was in the parking lot, and took this picture.

In that
moment, the rainbow that I saw took on a whole new perspective for me. I had
just told a group of 10-11 year old students about what that rainbow meant, and
then I got to see one that bright and full. I used the picture during the
Sunday morning services, and it really added something to the lesson.
God has made
many promises throughout the Bible. But God’s credibility started here in Genesis
9. God said that the rainbow is a promise to us that He will never wipe out the
earth again with a flood, and to my knowledge, there has not been a global
flood since Noah.
What an
awesome God we have. He keeps his promises and we can remember that every time
we see a rainbow!
