The One Thing - part 14 - Promises, Promises, Promises

We are now at the next to last post of the series called "The One Thing". We have been in this series since March 5th! It has been amazing. I have been sharing with you the one thing in each of the chapters (we have skipped a few) of the book of Joshua that has jumped out at me. If I could also say that it's important to know that sometimes that is how we should dive into the Bible. We should pick a passage or chapter or even a book and ask God to show us just one thing in that text He wants us to know.

So as we dive into this next to last post I want to draw our attention to the verse below:

"Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.” - Joshua 21:45 NIV

Every time we hear the word promise in the Bible we should get excited. When God uses the word "promise" in the Bible it's not just an empty word like sometimes when we use it.

I mean let's face the word "promise" to some of us has a negative feel to it because we have had so many people not follow through. But God does!!

He had promised Israel that they would have the Promised Land. (It was conveniently named don't you think.) This verse comes right after they had fought for the land they now have. The land God promised them.

But when I look at the promises of God, I am taken back further than Joshua, Moses and even Abraham. I am taken all the way back to Noah. Why Noah?

There was an event in Noah's life that came about because of the wickedness of the world. God flooded the Earth. He saved Noah from the flood in a big boat that God had instructed him to build. When the flood waters went receded, God had a conversation with Noah. In this conversation, God gave Noah a promise.

“Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant [promise] between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.” - Genesis 9:14-15 NIV [the word 'promise' added]

All of God's promises hold true. This is how I know - there has never been a global flood that has destroyed the Earth. God's very first promise to us is still true to this day!!

So when the word promise appears in the Bible and God's is attached to it - it will be kept!

That is one thing that is awesome!!!
