Did you ever have someone break a promise to you? I know I have and I’m sure that your answer is the same. I know that I have also broken promises that I have made to people and I am sure that you would say the same again.
As in past weeks, I have shared with you some thoughts on some
topics that have been brought forward to me after listening to some new
Elevation Worship songs. This the part of the song that stood out at me:
“Light of the world
Tremble the darkness
Nothing can stop it
You are the God of the promise
Every word
Will be accomplished
You are the God of the promise” [1]
Those words got me thinking about some of the promises of God. The
one I think about the most is the one He gave to Noah.
“I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of
the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth
and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between
me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the
waters become a flood to destroy all life.” - Genesis 9:13-15 NIV
This shows me God’s track record when it comes to promises. He
told Noah and generations to follow that He would never flood the whole earth
again. Now some people would say “But there is still flooding that happens.” I
would say to that “You are correct.” But that isn’t what God promised. God
promised that there would never be a global flood again and to my knowledge
there hasn’t been a global flood since the one in Noah’s time. So God has kept
that promise.
What makes us think that He won’t keep others?
He promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations.
God then blessed Abraham with many decedents that then became the nation of
Israel and the very line that Jesus the Son of God came from (Genesis 12 +
Matthew 1).
God also said (to Israel) that He would never leave us
(Deuteronomy 31:6). God is always right there going through our storms of life
that seem to come up suddenly. We see this when Peter walks on water and begins
to look at the storm instead of keeping his eyes on Jesus (Matthew 14:22-32).
We often do the same thing and we are actually the ones that run off and then
blame God for leaving us. God is always there for us. He is always with us
because He made a promise.
Just like the song lyrics above say - “Every word will be
accomplished. You are the God of the promise.”[1]
Hallelujah that He is the God of the promise!
