I
am reading through the book of Joshua with a couple of guys from church. In
this series of posts I will share with you one thing that stands out to me in
the chapters that we read. This is not a major study on the book of Joshua. I'm
just sharing the one thing.
In
Joshua 1, we see God talking to Joshua and giving him instructions as he prepares
to take over as the leader of the Israelites following the death of Moses. As
God is giving these instructions, He says the phrase "be strong and
courageous" a total of three times in this conversation (1:1-9).
Joshua
had been with Moses, and he had learned from Moses; but, he probably was scared
to death at the idea of leading God's people. I mean, after all, they were a
handful. But God kept telling him, "be strong and courageous." God
knew Joshua was nervous and told him to not be afraid because He was with him.
Joshua
didn't know what was going to happen or what he was going to do as leader. He
just said what God said to say and did what God said to do.
Sometimes
life can feel that way. We aren't really sure what is going to happen or what
we are going to do.
God
says the same thing to us that He said to Joshua: “'Have I not commanded you?
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord
your God will be with you wherever you go.'" - Joshua
1:9 NIV
