How many of you like
hearing tales of the past? You know, those stories that come up during a
conversation with your mom or dad or grandparents. Those little stories that
they tell you with a smile on their face as they remembered the events of the
story like they were yesterday.
I love hearing those
kinds of stories.
In Joshua 4, we see the
nation of Israel construct a memorial to what God had done for them when they
crossed the Jordan (Joshua 3). Joshua told them this:
“So Joshua called
together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each
tribe, and said to them, “Go over before the ark of the Lord your God into the
middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder,
according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, to serve as a sign
among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones
mean?’ tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the
covenant of the Lord. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were
cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”” -
Joshua 4:4-7 NIV
(bold added)
The 12 stone memorial was
a way for Israel to continuously tell future generations the story of what God
had done for them. I mean, if I saw a pile of random rocks just sitting there,
I would ask why they were there. Then that opens up the opportunity to tell the
story.
The same works for us.
When we see things in life happen and we have been through something similar,
we are reminded that God brought us through and He will always bring us
thorough.
What 12 stone moments do
you remember?
