As I was thinking about what to write for
this post, I was reminded of this little story in Luke 10:
“As Jesus and his disciples were on their
way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him.
She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he
said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.
She came to him and asked, 'Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to
do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!' 'Martha, Martha,' the Lord
answered, 'you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are
needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be
taken away from her.'" - Luke 10:38-42
NIV
This was me this past week. I was focused
on many things and was feeling a little stressed just like Martha. I needed to
homework, work on a lesson for church, help the kids, work on things around the
house, write a blog post or two and get ready to make some videos. I was busy
with so many things. So here is what I get from the brief story above.
Focus on one thing
"You are worried and upset about many
things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one."
Martha had a lot of things going on and
that wasn't bad thing. It's good to be productive. But try one thing at a time.
It's easier to juggle one thing than 3 or 4 things. You will also find that
doing things one at a time they will be done better. You will also having a
good feeling about completing tasks. You feel like you accomplished something. I know that I did!
Focus on the One
"--or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and
it will not be taken away from her."
Mary on the other hand in the middle of all
the stuff that needed done was focused on Jesus. She wasn't stressed. She
wasn't worried. She wasn't anxious. She was content. She was happy. When you
feel like there is a lot going on - just stop and turn your focus to Jesus. Ask
Him to help you figure out how to approach the tasks of the day. He will give
you rest and calm your busy nerves.
Turn your focus to one thing at a time and
turn your focus to the One.
