The Dawn – part 1 – God Spoke

Every story has to start somewhere.

About a month ago, a friend and I started a book called "The Story" written by Max Lucado and Ryan Frazee. In this book they zero in on the great story of God that runs through the Bible. It's a story of amazing love, forgiveness and grace.

In the first part of the story, we see the Earth as a formless void and the words:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” – Genesis 1:1-2 (NIV)

But as we read the first 25 verses of Genesis 1 we start to see a pattern in HOW God is creating the heavens and the Earth. Throughout those verses we see these three words… “….GOD SAID…” [1]

So I picture God looking down or “hovering” over the Earth. Then God begins to speak. “Let there be light, sky, dry ground, seas and oceans, trees and plants. Let there be sun, moon and stars.” [2]

As God speaks, the Earth begins to take shape. God is creating everything we see by just speaking. It’s amazing to think about the Earth moving as God speaks. But as we read, God isn’t just creating the Earth. God is also speaking the entire universe into existence.

“God created the Heavens and Earth—all you see, all you don’t see.” – Genesis 1:1, MSG

The Earth is a pretty big place. But this planet we sit on is nothing against the vastness of what God has created. God created the heavens and the Earth by simply speaking all of it into existence. But we don’t even know anything about what He has created.

When I think about Earth and all that is here, I don’t know about you but I get amazed. Then when I think about what is outside this atmosphere, just what I know to be there, I am even more amazed. The moon is at its closest 225,623 miles away from the earth. 225,623 miles! You can fit 30 earths in that distance! [3]

All of a sudden Earth is pretty small when you think about what I just said. The distance between here and the moon – incredible. But that is not all.

You know those little itty bitty dots we see in the night sky. They are bigger than all of the planets in our solar system and they are bigger than the sun. They are just so far away in the vast heavens that God has spoken into existence.

What God has created just blows my mind! God is amazing! I cannot even begin to wrap my head around what He has created. (If you would like to get a brief look into what I mean – watch the video below or click here.)

But creating the heavens and the Earth was not God’s greatest creation. Next week, we will look how the Creation Story shifts from speaking to another form of creating.
1] verses 3, 6, 9, 11, 14, 20, 24
2] Genesis 1:3-14, NIV
