This post is tough for me, and I'm sure
everyone who reads this will agree. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus had some
things to say about worry. We can find those words in Matthew 6. We are going
to look at those verses in sections. Here is the first section:
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry
about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will
wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the
birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your
heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any
one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?" - Matthew 6:25-27
NIV
God (Father) cares for everyone on
earth. Every living thing on earth is cared for by God. He provides for the
smallest creatures on earth, and we mean more to God than anything else on
earth. God took time and created us. David writes these words in Psalm 139 -
“For you created my inmost being; you
knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and
wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”
Psalm 139:13-14 NIV
I just love the word "knit".
When someone knits something it takes time to get to the end result. God knit
us together! Then, in the book of Ephesians, we are called God's masterpieces!
A masterpiece is someone's finest work, and Paul uses that word when talking
about us. [Read Ephesians 2:10 NLT]
So if God says that about us, He will
care for us because we mean so much to Him.
This is the second section:
“And why do you worry about clothes?
See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell
you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If
that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and
tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of
little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we
drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and
your heavenly Father knows that you need them. - Matthew 6:28-32 NIV
God knows what we need. God will
provide for our needs. We may not know where it's going to come from or how it
is even possible. But God will come through for us. We have to have faith and
trust in God with the things that we need. In the Garden of Eden, God provides
clothes for Adam and Eve after they had sinned and realized that they were
naked and needed clothes. “The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his
wife and clothed them.” (Genesis 3:21 NIV) God will also provide for us.
The last section:
But seek first his kingdom and his
righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do
not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has
enough trouble of its own.”
Matthew 6:33-34 NIV
We have to seek God for these things.
He knows that we need them so we should then seek Him with faith and trust that
He will provide for us. We also should not worry, because as the text says,
worrying does not do us any good, and it's not what God would have for us.
But it's so easy to fall into worry
isn't it? When the money, isn't there and the things we need are hard to find.
I know how that is. But I also know what it's like to see God come through in
big ways. There was a time when money was a little short, and we needed a small
amount to get through the week. I didn't know what we were going to do. But
then a few days later a check came in the mail from the previous electric
company that we had, and they were refunding us an overpaid balance. It was
enough for what we needed.
God does provide for us. God cares for
us. We just need to wait on Him and trust Him so when He comes through for us
we can see it.
